“Uh, hello. You've reached Keisuke... I’m sorry, but I’m not able to pick up right now. Leave me a message and I'll try to call back. Um... thanks, bye.”
[VOICE CALL, TEXT MESSAGING, AND PHOTO SHARING IS ENABLED ON THIS CELL PHONE.]
[Oh, shit, are they...? He can't even remember ever seeing the difference between baking soda and baking powder... He didn't exactly do a lot of cooking back home. Or any cooking back home.
He can't really lie to Slaine, though...]
we didnt have a lot of that kind of stuff either food was kinda scarce, especially fresh stuff, so um... i mean i can try to help though? why are you making cookies??
[Together they are merely two halves of a whole idiot.
Or at least two halves of a whole "complete pleb in the kitchen."]
sure... at least trying to help out is better than just sitting around oh... i dont really check the bulletin board much but i think i heard something was up i didnt know dal dal was wrapped up in it ): thats a good idea... are you in the home ec room or?
[Sounds about right. With their powers combined...
It'll probably be a total disaster but at least they have most of a recipe]
If you've heard about those games, Dal Dal tried to warn others and it seems she got responses arguing on behalf of the guy getting people killed. I can understand why she'd be frustrated.
Yes, I'm in the home ec room. I got someone to leave the oven on, since otherwise it won't work outside of club activities.
[Okay, so they'll make something resembling food rather something resembling some sort of monster, though whether or not it'll be edible is a different question.]
i try not to... it all sounds like bad news to me oh... thats... um people really shouldnt get involved with the other students but... yeah i can see why too (´_`。)
ok ill be there in a few mins
[And he is, indeed, there in "a few mins."
He slips through the door, greeting Slaine with a brief half-wave and peering at whatever concoction he's working on.] Still deciding on the baking soda-baking powder thing...?
[Slaine is inclined to agree, regarding getting involved with the locals. Given their circumstances there's honestly no reason to trust them... And he certainly gave Daisuke chances to give him a reason to believe he was acting for their benefit.
But there were no answers, and he can understand why Dal Dal was frustrated by the responses she got to her bulletin board posting.
With Keisuke on the way, he assembles the ingredients he can discern from the recipe. Fortunately it's just left to a debate between baking soda and baking powder, which leaves him squinting ponderously at the smudge on his recipe and wondering what might've been.
Hearing that greeting prompts him to straighten, looking up from the list with something of a small, wry smile]
I've yet to figure out what sets the two apart, unfortunately... Perhaps we could try a half-batch with each and see how that goes?
[At least half of them would have the correct ingredients then, in theory]
[Keisuke's opinion is: why can't we all get along... and by that, he means, "why can't we all just stay as far away from the native students as possible."
He can't help but crack a very small smile at Slaine's reasoning. It's... smart, honestly; not something Keisuke would've ever thought to do. It also seemed like a safe bet, just in case he had chosen wrong...]
Yeah - we could do that...! It'd be kind of like an experiment.
[Which one is right as well as what in god's name would happen to the one that was wrong.]
You could mix one and I could mix the other. ...If you let me know what all of the ingredients are, of course...
[He manages a small smile for that, honestly relieved... Because this really isn't at all his area of expertise. Others surely know exactly what this last ingredient is.
And he doesn't miss a beat in stepping slightly closer, just within arm's reach so he can offer Keisuke the recipe he'd written down]
These were the instructions Dal Dal gave me last time, so aside that blurred bit... we should be able to follow this recipe. The oven's already on, so we don't have to worry about that.
[It's one of the last areas Keisuke would mark as expertise for himself as well, though Dal Dal had made some vague promises of teaching him at least the basics of baking and cooking. He had watched her a little bit, but it was obvious how much that had actually trickled down to his basic conscious state.
Keisuke takes the recipe when offered, squinting down at the (slightly smeared) recipe.]
Alright... [He's fortunate he's been in school as long as he has; his reading skills (at least for kanji) had improved in leaps and bounds here, especially considering much of it had been thought of as unnecessary to teach in the military school he went to as a kid.
He sets the piece of paper down and grabs a bowl, beginning to pick up other things for the mixture.] I'll take the - uh - baking powder one, then. [So he does.
He glances up from his work to Slaine.] Where... else were you, besides Earth?
[One of Slaine's earlier statements was something that Keisuke didn't find as shocking as he used to, but it still stuck in his mind.]
[With their plan of attack agreed upon, Slaine is quick to follow suit, collecting a bowl and some measuring cups. It doesn't take very long to put together the ingredients, and then it's a simple matter of stirring.
Glancing from one bowl to the other, he can't really discern a difference between the two. They look about the same, and he supposes that makes sense when the difference is only one ingredient - and only a small amount is included in the recipe.
Still, he was hoping it might be a little more apparent as they progressed.
When he's posed that question, he looks up from the dough he's stirring with a small jolt]
Ah, when I was eleven I traveled to Vers with my father. I lived there for a time, then in the satellite belt formed around Earth when the moon was fractured during a previous war.
[He's accustomed to that needing some exposition, by now]
[With the recipe, baking doesn't seem all that difficult. They mix the dough together, as he does now in his own bowl, carefully, and then they put it on the pan and they place it in the oven for a certain amount of time. Fairly easy, then. It was the procuring the ingredients that was the difficult bit, back home. He's still amazed that they had better opportunity for food here than there.
He wonders if the same is true for Slaine, if he lived somewhere that... wasn't earth. Vers. He has no idea what he's talking about; the word is completely foreign to him.
His eyes are a little round at the whole bit about the moon fracturing, too. His stirring pauses for a half-second as he hears that before resuming.]
What's... Vers?
[Deer in headlights expression. Just a little bit.]
[Slaine's attention has turned to looking down at the dough thoughtfully, working lumps of flour out of the mixture. Although he did this with Dal Dal, it's different not having her at his elbow telling him what to do, or giving him advice...
But it wouldn't be much of a surprise or pick-me-up if she was doing work like that.
He glances up at Keisuke when he's asked that question, halting in mixing the cookie dough for a moment]
Ah...right. Vers is the name Mars was given, when it became autonomous instead of an Earth colony.
[Now that the ingredients are mixed, Keisuke starts to inspect the two, seeing if there were any differences in consistency. He... doesn't think so. Anyway, they're going to have to put them out on the trays soon, so he walks over to the sink to wash his hands before returning to the counter.
He's pulling over a tray and beginning to section out pieces that he thinks are big enough to eventually become cookies when Slaine continues.]
Oh. [Keisuke's education isn't good, but he knows Mars is a planet, at least. An Earth colony? He can barely wrap his head around the idea of it.]
So, [after a pause's consideration.] you've... been in space, right? What's it like?

Squinting at them just isn't helping]
Same here. Not while I was on Earth, but I was a kid back then.
You wouldn't mind? Dal Dal helped with posting information and got some difficult responses, so I thought I'd try and cheer her up.
